Letters from the Ryan Family Papers that give a narrative of the adult life of Colonel George Ryan (1836-1864). The Ryan family played an important role in Norfolk history. Arriving from Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1827, John and Mathew Ryan established a thriving textile mill in Norfolk, employing dozens of Irish workers. John’s son George was educated at West Point and pursued a career in the military, rising from Second Lieutenant to Colonel before his untimely death on May 8, 1864 at the age of 28 during the Battle of the Wilderness near Spotsylvania.
